Plantar Fasciitis
Yesterday, I went into a running store to get inserts for my shoes and they guy there was very helpful. He watched my stand, walk and run and told me he thought what I had was plantar fasciitis. I had entertained this thought before since it seemed like the most reasonable explanation for intense pain on the bottoms of my feet when I run, but everything I had read said people with plantar fasciitis experience a lot of pain first thing in the morning, and I have never felt any pain except when I am actually running, so i had always dismissed it. But anyway, the guy in the store said that was not necessarily the case and he was pretty sure that it is what I have.
It turns out that when I run I land on the inside of my foot instead of flat on the foot, and that is what is putting too much pressure on the plantar fascia. It could be that my old shoes had better support on the inside of the ankle to stop me from turning my feet as much when I run. I will be seeing a friend of mine from New York in about a week, so hopefully he can bring me my old shoes back. Until then, I think I am going to stick to the elliptical and the bike, and very short runs on the treadmill.
Yesterday, I did 30 minutes on the elliptical, and then went over to the treadmill. I knew I could run for at least 5 minutes without my feet hurting, so I figured I would try and see how far I could get in 5 minutes. I decided I try and consciously run more on the outside of my feet, even though the man in the store told me it was not something you can really change. I turned the treadmill to 6.0 and started running, landing on the center/outside of my feet (I’m not sure if I was overcompensating). Well, I guess my calf muscles were not used to that movement because they stated to get very tight. After a minute of 2 I switched back to “normal” running and only managed to do 4 minutes at 6.0. Afterwards I gave my calves a very good stretch. Even though it felt unnatural today, I think I might try and ease into it and get my muscles more used to running on the outside of my feet.
